There's a First Time for Everything

I love block of the month programs. In theory, anyway. You sign up to receive a new block pattern and fabric once a month, and in a year you have enough blocks for a quilt. That's the idea, it doesn't always work that way though.

BOM basket

Moonglow was a block of the month series released in 1999 - 2000. Yes, over 10 years ago. I fully intended to make two quilts, one for my husband and one for my mother, so I signed up for two kits. I've made a total of two blocks. In twelve years. Apparently the pattern is now available as a free download.....
If you want to see the quilt top, Nic has recently completed hers and she did a really lovely job.

I decided to try the block of the month thing again, and I signed up for Fat Quarter Shop's Designer Mystery BoM partly because I thought I might keep up this time and partly because it uses Bonnie & Camille's Vintage Modern line, which is SO. DARN. CUTE.

BOM progress!!

The program has been running for three months, and I have made ALL THREE BLOCKS!

The question now is, can I keep up this hectic pace?

  1. Thank you so much for pointing me to that free pattern!! I'm quite thrilled. I doubt I will be finding the fabric to match it of course. There are no great wonderful fabric stores around me.. but, I will certainly be loving trying that pattern out! Thanks again!

  2. I remember that Moon glow bom. I was a new quilter when I first saw that and there was no way I was going to try it.

  4. Yes you can! I have a 'Moonglow' of my own. It's a Kingston quilt from around that era as well. I've been thinking that I could pull it out now and do one a month....or maybe not. ;)

  6. I've wanted to try a BoM. I can't find one I reeeeeeally want tho.

You might want to slow down with this whole 'keeping up' and 'completing on time' thing. Some of us aren't as awesome as you ;)
(Seriously glad that you're making that BoM tho' cause I really wanted to see how it turned out)

  8. P.S. How is it possible that I've been following you in Google Reader forever but somehow have not officially been on your followers list until today?? So even though it looks like I'm brand new, you know better...

  10. Aw, thanks. Though the top's not quite finished. Still working on those border strips.
You got TWO kits? Cool :) i saw it after the bom had finished and you could buy the kit with those lovely cardboard pattern months all at once. Now the kit osts more and they've changed the fabric slightly, so I'm really glad I bought it way back in 2001 :)
One tip I'd give you is to cut the border strips you need first and put them away so you know you'll have the right lengths. Also, jump to month 12 and do those blocks before going back to the stars. They're much quicker and then you'll have half the blocks done.
I forget, are you hand sewing this?
Good luck with your new bom. Good start so far

  11. Of course it's one a month so you have the whole month to finish the block if you do a bit at a time.

  12. OOOHHH I'm subscribed to that BOM but since I live in Argentina I've only received the first kit... I have to wait for the others... but anyway, I haven't even started the first one ;)

  14. Just keep sewing, Just keep sewing...can you hear Dory?
You are certainly not alone. I have at least 3 BOM that I can think of that are still in progress. It's all about the journey and not the finish line right?!
