Pattern Review.....and a giveaway

In March I participated in the Pretty {little} Pouch Swap. It was so much fun to create something beautiful and usable for my partner, although I had a really hard time picking which bag pattern to use. I mean seriously, there are tons of great ones out there! After a couple of test runs with different patterns, I settled on the Scrappy Quilted Pouch designed by the lovely Kat of Diary of a Flutter.Kat
Am I ever glad I chose this pattern! It was a breeze! I like a pattern that has lots of pictures because it's nice to see exactly what you're supposed to do. Sure I can (and do) read the directions, but an accompanying picture makes my day. Kat's pattern has 48 pictures!!! Way more than I expected.  If you're more of a reader than a picture follower, don't worry, Kat's directions are wonderful too. I made the pattern exactly as she directed and got really great results. Another plus for me was the time involved. This patterns whips up quickly. All told, I had it done in about 90 minutes and that included my fabric decision making time, which as you all know, tends to stretch out at times. In this case, it even involved a trip to the store, for the polka dotty fabric.
As you can tell, I'm super happy with the pattern and will definitely return to Kat's shop when I'm looking for something else.

This is the bag I made for my Pretty {little} Pouch Swap partner

Pretty {little} Pouch Swap - done!

It's a good size, about 9" wide by 5" high.

Make up Bag

So, onto the giveaway.......
Here's what I'm giving a lucky winner. I was inspired to try a bit of improv piecing, which strangely enough I'd never done before. I'll just say that now I'm hooked and you'll be seeing more of this from me. I was a bit stumped however, on what to do for the flap. Holly came to the rescue with the brilliant idea of the inset pieced strip.
Scrappy Quilted Pouch - front

Scrappy Quilted Pouch - back

I think my favourite part might be the inside fabric. This map of the London underground has become my go-to fabric!
Scrappy Quilted Pouch - open

For this bag I tried a new to me kind of sew-in magnetic snap. I liked it and I didn't. I like that it puts less stress on the fabric and that it's a soft closure. It's much easier to open than the other kind. I don't like that it's a pain in the butt to attach. I don't know really, the jury is still out....

In addition to the bag, I'm also giving away the pattern that I used for this bag! So if you don't win the bag you could still win the pattern.

To enter, just leave a comment telling me what you'd use the bag for. Makeup? Hand sewing supplies? Toenail clippings? uuuhhm actually maybe I don't need to know that.... ALSO tell me if you'd rather the finished bag or the pattern as your prize (it's ok to want both!)

For a second entry, leave me another comment telling me that you're following my blog. If you're not already following, add me to your blog reader, and then leave a second comment! Easy!

I'll keep the contest open until Thursday April 19 at 8PM PST and announce the winners Friday morning.

  15. I LOVE your pouches!! They both turned out fantastic!! :) Your partner is very lucky. I would be more than happy with either! I think if I won the pouch you made I would definitely keep it in my bag to hold some essentials! I would love taking that with me everywhere. And maybe I'd just take it out and fiddle around with it every time I'm at the store just to show it off. ;)

  16. Cute little bags! I might give it to my MSM swap partner! I had the same opinion about using that magnetic closure. It's MOST strange sewing it in, right? And that Tube fabric, it's awesome! Thanks!

  22. Awesome! I love the little hexagon detail on the one you gave away; I love the improv piecing & the colors on the one for the giveaway. And the map fabric is WONDERFUL! If I had an adorable bag like that, I'd probably put handsewing tools in it. And, it would be a tossup whether I'd want the bag (to use immediately) or the pattern (to create lots more!)

  29. I love both bag and pattern! I'd probably use it to keep Chapstick and other boring things that I can never find in my purse. Not so exciting, but they'd never get lost again!

Love both bags. If I don't win I'm buying the pattern! Thanks for sharing!

  30. Sewing supplies!! So pretty and I want both!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think I would use the bag for "stuff." It doesn't seem to matter the size, but I always find a use for it. If I have to choose, I'd like the pattern - I had considered purchasing before. If the option for both is out there, that okay too. I really like piecing on the flap.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love your improv piecing. I haven't been brave enough to venture there, mainly because of my perfectionism issues :) I'd love to win both. If I had the pattern, I'd totally make it...plus...I'm hoping I'm your partner in plips! I love the bag you made for your partner!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh...no...its too hard to choose....i definitely want both....so so adorable!!
I would initially use it to take away a small stitchery as i am going on hols in about 12 days...but it has so many uses...love it!

  34. Thanks for the very generous review Katie!!
I just adore that rainbow improv bag you've made. Although I just wanted to leave my comment of thanks not an entry. So you can feel free to disqualify this if you want.
Although it would be kind cool to win a pouch made by a happy customer using my pattern come to think of it LOL :)

  35. Gorgeous!! I'd LOVE that bag! I certainly would not put toenails in it ;)

  36. I'm glad I'm allowed to want both! If I had to, I'd choose the finished product. It's so fun & already done for me ;) I have been thinking of jumping on the hexy bandwagon...and would totally need something like this to carry my bits & pieces around in. It would have to come out to dinner with me a couple times too. When all my friends & family want one, I'll just send them to you! haha

  37. I would use this as a little clutch out. I would love the pattern. Thanks for the giveaway!

  38. Beautiful bag! I'd use it for... something fabulous! lol. It looks similar to Kat's QAYG pouch - which I've made before. They turn out so nicely!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I need a bag for my sketching pencils (the box fell apart..and I duct taped it...and it's ugly) So if I won the bag I would totally put my pencils in it. Or I could make one if I won the pattern.

  40. I thought I followed you...then I checked my blog roll and you weren't there. So I've totally fixed that ;)

  45. I love this! Especially the map of the London Underground. :) I think I'd use this for my "little purse" ... when I'm going to the gym and don't need to take everything in the world with me. ;)

    You quilters are SO talented!

  46. Those bags are beautiful! I love the rainbow impromptu piecing! I would love both but if I had to choose one it would be the pattern so I can experiment myself. This would be perfect to put inside my bigger purse/bag that I need to go anywhere with the kids but be able to grab my wallet and things quickly. Thanks for the chance to win!
